About the Moonshot Moment:
In 2012, the former SDIRC Superintendent Dr. Fran Adams, launched the “Moonshot Moment: 90% Literacy by Third Grade” making it one of the 140 communities working with the Campaign for Grade Level Reading (CGLR,) a nationwide movement of local leaders, states, nonprofits, and foundations putting a stake in the ground on third-grade reading. The communities are adopting a collective impact strategy, engaging the full community around the goal of supporting low-income children from birth through third grade. Acknowledging that schools alone cannot address all the challenges that keep children from learning to read, the School District of Indian River County works with nonprofits and other partners to ensure that children arrive at kindergarten ready to succeed, attend school regularly, and keep learning through the summer months. The Indian River County Moonshot Moment Literacy Leaders group is comprised of over 70 business, nonprofit, School District, and concerned citizens working together to create programs and momentum to reach the 90% literacy goal!
About the Kindergarten Readiness Collaborative:
Recognizing a need for innovative solutions to improve lives and bring about lasting change in Indian River County, particularly in the area of education, local community leaders rallied together to form the Moonshot Moment. Kindergarten readiness was quickly identified as a vital step to growing successful learners, so the Kindergarten Readiness Collaborative (KRC) formed.
The KRC engaged in a year long process to analyze current community conditions, define and coordinate strategies, and build connections within the early childhood sector. The collaborative consists of more than 40 social service organizations, foundations, funders and child care providers. This group completed a strategic plan in 2015 that identifies local needs, incorporates community input, and translates best practice research into strategies for local action. In line with the strategic plan, two part-time staff members were hired to manage and coordinate efforts on behalf of the collaborative. United Way is providing KRC staff with an office space in their Non-Profit Incubation Unit.
As part of the Moonshot Moment goal, the Kindergarten Readiness Collaborative’s mission is create and support a high quality early childhood development system that is family-centered. Our vision is for all children in Indian River County to be prepared for kindergarten across the five critical domains: social/emotional, physical health and well-being, cognitive, communication and adaptive learning.
