Thank you to 211 Palm Beach/Treasure Coast for awarding Big Brothers Big Sister as Organization of the Year in Indian River County today at 211 HelpLine’s Non-Profit Awards, Jewels of the Treasure Coast Luncheon.
In April, Big Brothers Big Sisters families were treated to two awesome family events in St. Lucie County. The events are educational, fun, and completely free for Big Brothers Big Sisters families to attend.
On April 22nd, Big Brothers Big Sisters partnered with Fort Pierce Central’s Culinary Arts Program, Cobra Café, to bring Big Brothers Big Sisters families a Family Cooking Class! Families, with the help of Cobra Café students, worked in groups to create a healthy and tasty meal. The meal included roasted chicken, oven baked potatoes, and sautéed broccoli. After preparing their meal, families sat down together and enjoyed the meal in the beautiful Cobra Café dining room. All families went home with a healthy cookbook and information about safe food preparation. Big Brothers Big Sisters parent Gloria applauded the event and thoroughly enjoyed it with her children. Gloira said, “This event was very hands on for everyone. My son told me that he learned how to cook today, this made me really happy.”
On April 29th, Big Brothers Big Sisters worked with the St. Lucie Mets baseball organization to bring families a Baseball Bash! Members of the Mets organization came down to the Mets conference room and spoke to families about their career with the Mets. This was very valuable as children learned about new types of careers. Families then went outside and learned proper stretching techniques and did some group exercises together. Families were then treated to a picnic style meal on the right field terrace. After dinner, families went onto the field for the national anthem and enjoyed a great baseball game. Every child left with a Mets backpack, a children’s book about baseball, and many great memories.
These events part of a grant from Bank of America, seek to give families meaningful learning opportunities. Our cooking event’s goal was to show families that healthy eating can be easy and fun. Our goal with the baseball event was to give children a better understanding of careers and to help parents to empower their children to achieve career goals. These goals were achieved through hands on learning opportunities. We believe that by connecting families to the community, that we are better preparing them for future challenges. We believe that by giving families meaningful learning experiences, that family bonds become that much tighter. We believe in Powering BIG Futures.
