Today Travis is in his junior year of High School, has consistently good grades and a goal to graduate from college. To help him achieve that goal, Andy has helped him secure a 4-year scholarship to Indian River State College.
Andy reflects that his “little Brother” has not had the easiest lot in life but says that never stops him from having a positive outlook. He notes that Travis’ best quality is his ability to look beyond life’s trouble, venture past adversity and look at the good in life.
Christina, Travis’ Mom, feels that Andy is the “most wonderful man in the world-the best person she has ever met.” She hates to think what Travis’ life would have become without Andy and Big Brothers Big Sisters. She describes him as a Godsend to her family. She actually considers Andy to be like one of her own sons and says she would “give that man her own heart if he needed it”.

Big Brothers Big Sisters, “Start Something” Winner of the 2014 SLCTV PSA Grant Program!
Thomas (Little Brother) and Monica (Big Sister) have been matched in the site-based program since December 2014 in Okeechobee County.
Thomas is a very serious third grader who came into the program struggling academically in reading and math. Monica, a student currently enrolled at Indian River State College, plans to graduate this fall with a major in Education.
Monica and Thomas worked on reading comprehension and math worksheets every week to prepare Thomas for the standardized test this school year. When they first began working together, it was very difficult for Thomas to finish a reading worksheet during one session.
Within three months of working together Thomas was able to read the story, underline and identify the paragraphs and answer the comprehension questions following the story and still have time to spare. Monica describes Thomas as a very smart and fun student. She enjoys his eagerness to learn and the dedication he puts towards everything they do together. Thomas shared that his Big Sister Monica helps him with his work and helps him get better grades in class.
