Big Brothers Big Sisters AmeriCorps Reads is proud to announce that it has received $143,421 in AmeriCorps funding from Volunteer Florida for our school-based reading program. As one of 36 AmeriCorps programs across the state being funded, the award will allow Big Brothers Big Sisters AmeriCorps Reads to play a significant role in Florida to increase student achievement, boost high school graduation rates, and provide career readiness and teacher training. Locally, AmeriCorps members serve VPK through third grade students one on one as reading tutors in 16 schools. Volunteer Florida will administer the funding, which includes $12,071,622 in federal grants from the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) and includes matching funds representing our community’s local investment in Big Brothers Big Sisters AmeriCorps Reads. AmeriCorps members dedicate a year of their lives to service, gaining valuable job skills and learning to succeed in the most challenging environments. This funding allows local organizations like Big Brothers Big Sisters to put AmeriCorps members to work in schools. Many AmeriCorps members attend college in the area in which they serve, providing a direct investment in Florida’s colleges and universities. Thank you Volunteer Florida and CNCS for your confidence in our work!
